OpenAI Decisions API Moves to General Availability

The API targets specific classification and routing decisions rather than long, open-ended conversations.

What happened?

OpenAI announced the general availability of the Decisions API with the GPT-6 Luna model, adding support for images and structured data, and expanding the number of questions that can be processed in a single request.

Why does it matter?

Separating small decisions from general conversation may make costs and outputs easier to measure, especially in routing, classification, and repetitive policy tasks.

My perspective

I believe teams should measure decision quality and error boundaries before focusing on batch size; speed does not compensate for a weak escalation policy.

Scope and availability

The announcement concerns the OpenAI API and its current requirements; limits and pricing may change as the service is updated.

Three executive questions

  1. What specific decision will the API own?
  2. What cases require human escalation?
  3. How will decision quality be monitored after data changes?
